Sheila Chelangat leads Kenyan 1-2 in Istanbul Half Marathon as Moroccan Amghar inherits Simiu's title

Kenya's Sheila Chelangat has won the Istanbul Half Marathon, leading a Kenyan 1-2 finish, while Moroccan Hicham Amghar claimed the men's title.

Kenya's Sheila Chelangat clinched the women's title at the 2024 Istanbul Half Marathon finishing the race in an impressive 1 hour, 6 minutes, and 46 seconds. 

The event, held on a rainy Sunday, saw Chelangat leading a competitive field where her compatriot Miriam Chebet came in a close second at 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 11 seconds. 

Ethiopian athlete Zewditu Aderaw completed the podium in third place, clocking 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 16 seconds.

The Istanbul Half Marathon, renowned for its rigorous 10-kilometer and 21-kilometer courses, attracted nearly 14,000 participants from 72 different countries. 

This diverse international gathering underscored the event’s prestige, which is ranked among the top 11 "Gold Label" half marathons globally.

In the men's category,Moroccan Hicham Amghar outran his rivals with a stunning time of 59 minutes and 46 seconds, claiming the top spot. 

Ethiopian Dinkalem Ayele was hot on his heels, finishing just seven seconds behind. Gemechu Bute, another strong contender from Ethiopia, took the third spot with a time of 1 hour and 2 seconds.

 Amghar's victory marked a significant step up from last year, where he finished second.

The Istanbul Half Marathon also doubled as the Turkish Half Marathon Championship, spotlighting local talents. 

Ali Kaya emerged victorious among Turkish men with a commendable time of 1 hour, 2 minutes, and 42 seconds. Özlem Kaya Alıcı was the fastest Turkish woman, completing her race in 1 hour, 13 minutes, and 32 seconds.
