Presenting a brief chronology of this case, AIU Head Brett Clothier revealed that Ruth Chepng'etich was informed of the news and even interviewed in person. She complied with requests regarding the AIU’s investigation.

“When there is a positive test for diuretics and masking agents, a provisional suspension is not mandatory under the World Anti-Doping Code,” Brett Clothier said in a statement.

"Ruth Chepng'etich was not provisionally suspended by the AIU at the time of notification, however, on 19 April, she opted for a voluntary provisional suspension while the AIU’s investigation was ongoing.”

“In the intervening months, the AIU continued its investigation and today issued a Notice of Charge and imposed its own provisional suspension.”

Clothier emphasised that Ruth Chepng’etich has the right to a hearing before a Disciplinary Tribunal, adding that the AIU will refrain from further comment until the case is resolved.

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a diuretic commonly used to treat fluid retention and high blood pressure. According to the WADA Code, it falls under class S5 (Diuretics and Masking Agents) and is prohibited at all times as a Specified Substance.

Diuretics like HCTZ can be misused to conceal the presence of other banned substances in urine. WADA laboratories only report HCTZ as positive if it exceeds 20 ng/mL in urine.

A specified substance typically carries a two-year ban, which may be adjusted based on the circumstances outlined in the WADA Code.

Meanwhile, this season, Ruth Chepng'etich only competed once, at the Lisbon Half Marathon, where she finished second. She was confirmed for the London Marathon but withdrew.
