Moraa looked comfortable and ready to strike but with 200m to go, her legs could not move fast enough and she was forced to settle for fourth place.

A number of track and field fans across the globe were sure that World champion Mary Moraa would take the 800m win at the Prefontaine Classic on Sunday night but that was not the case for the Kenyan.

Moraa looked comfortable and ready to strike but with 200m to go, her legs could not move fast enough and she was forced to settle for fourth place.

Olympic champion Athing Mu took the win, setting a new Personal Best time of 1:54.97 as Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson finished second in a time of 1:55.19.

Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin completed the podium in a Personal Best time of 1:55.96. It is unlike Moraa to finish outside the podium bracket and for this season especially where she has been unbeaten in the 800m.

In a post on her Facebook page, the 23-year-old explained what cost her victory at the event, “Not how I wanted to end the season. Felt unwell on the eve of the race but was glad to finish fourth 1:57.42 during the Wanda Diamond League final in the Prefontaine Classic. I take a break to reflect on a rather excellent 2023 season.”

She added that she was happy for her opponents for taking the win but she promised to bounce back better and also extended a hand of gratitude to her coach and her mentors, Hellen Obiri and Beatrice Chepkoech.

“I am happy for my competitors Athing Mu and Hodgkinson. I’m happy with how my season has turned out well…I started with the indoor tour but I was not in top form but I worked hard and got a gold medal in Budapest,” she said.
