Sprinter Mark Otieno is still keeping hope alive as far as Olympic qualification is concerned despite Team Kenya’s disappointing performance at the World Relays Championships.

Former 100m national champion Mark Otieno still has hopes of qualifying for the Paris Olympics in the 4x100m relay following Kenya’s poor showing at the World Relays Championships.

Kenya’s team to the World Relays finished the two-day event empty-handed after failing to win a medal or secure Olympic qualification.

Team Kenya featured in the mixed relays, men’s 4x100m, men’s 4x400m and women’s 4x400m and after the first day when three of the teams finished last, they had a second bite of the cherry on Day 2 to try and secure Olympic qualification.

However, with a top two finish needed in each of their heats, it was not to be. The mixed relay team finished last in their heat, while the men’s 4x100m team that had Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala, Otieno, Hesbon Ochieng and Meshack Babu was fourth in the third heat which saw South Africa and Australia claim Olympic spots.

The women’s 4x400m was also last with the men’s 4x400m impressing with a fourth-place finish.

Reflecting on their poor outing in the 4x100m realy, Otieno said the journey is still not over, backing his team to get it right soon.

“We are sprinters, but this journey sure feels like a marathon,” Otieno posted on social media.

“Didn't get the results we had hoped for, but I was just so happy and humbled to be at the world relay championships. I'm proud of our team. They gave it their all. Back to the drawing board and onto the next.”

It was an improvement somewhat for the men’s 4x100m relay team, which had finished last in Heat 4 on Day 1 in a time of 39.38 seconds, as they clocked 39.15 for their fourth place.

Team Kenya will now have to try their luck through the tough route based on ranking during the Olympic qualification period that runs from December 31, 2022 to June 30, 2024.
