Powell is highly regarded as one of the greatest sprinters in Jamaican and world history. He was nicknamed the 'Sub-10s King' during his active years, having run below the 10s mark over ninety times - the highest by a sprinter in history.

Record-wise, he broke the 100m world record on multiple occasions before his 9.74s was eventually smashed by Bolt with 9.69s at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. However, his personal best of 9.72s remains the fourth-fastest on the all-time list.
He is the latest on the long list of star athletes to have complained about poor treatment by Jamaican athletics authorities.
