AK Youth and Development chairman Barnaba Korir has disclosed how they are planning to select a formidable marathon team for the Olympic Games next year.

Athletics Kenya Youth and Development chairman Barnaba Korir has disclosed that a formidable marathon team for the Paris Olympic Games will be named at the end of the year.

Korir explained that AK would be keen to unveil six athletes and allow the team to prepare well for the showpiece, which is one of the most lucrative events in the world.

“In consultation with the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), we are doing things differently this time round.

We will announce the team early enough and ensure we win gold in both the men's and women's races,” Korir said as per The Star.

He further noted that they will use world rankings and performance for this year to select a team. He explained that they want to avoid past mistakes.

“We will look at the performance of marathoners this year and select a formidable squad. In the past, we have selected in the year of the Olympics or World Championship and we have occasionally missed out on the best athletes to represent the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also noted that there will be training camps for the 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000, and 10,000m.

“We are working closely with the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and the Ministry of Sports to start the camps in the new year.

This will mean the athletes will have to sacrifice some races and get compensated by the government as they train for the Olympics next year.

We have a good crop of young hungry athletes coming through the ranks like Daniel Simiu (5,000m), Jacob Krop (10,000) Simon Koech (steeplechase), and many others. If well prepared, I don't see why we can't return to the glory years,” he said, adding that they have already started planning for the global showpiece.
