Hellen Obiri is determined to claim her third straight Boston Marathon title despite fierce competition and a challenging training journey.

Hellen Obiri will be lining up for the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21, to win her third successive title.

The two-time world 5000m champion won her first title in Boston in 2023, just competing in her second marathon of her career.

She then defended her title at the 2024 edition of her marathon, and as she takes on rivals on Monday, she has made her intentions clear.

Hellen Obiri shifted her training base from the US to Kenya, and so far, she admitted that the journey has been a mix of success and some struggles along the way.

The main reason for her shift was due to the snow in the US, hindering effective training, and she was forced to move back to Kenya to facilitate her training.

The Olympic marathon bronze medallist revealed that she has invested most of her time working on her endurance and speed and is ready to rumble when she lines up against some of the best marathoners.

“It has been a really tough but fruitful journey preparing for Boston back at home and now I feel fully ready for the task ahead,” Hellen Obiri revealed in an interview with Telecom Asia.

“I have done a lot of work on endurance and speed and now with a few days to go, my focus will now be on getting mentally ready to do well.

“I know it will be tough because the field is very competitive and everyone wants to win, but my focus is on getting the third in a row. I am confident and I believe in the work that I have put in.”

Hellen Obiri will be going for a feat last achieved by Fatuma Roba from 1997 to 1999. Her journey in search of stardom will not be a walk in the park as she will be up against extremely experienced marathoners.

One of her greatest challengers will be Sharon Lokedi who finished second during last year’s edition of the race, and of course, she wants to go one place better this time around.

Sharon Lokedi claimed top honours at the 2025 New York City Half Marathon, and she will be out to capitalise on that win to impress in Boston.

She will also lock horns with Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso, who won the world title at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Yalemzerf Yehualaw, Kenya’s Irine Cheptai and legend Edna Kiplagat, will also be in the mix. Kiplagat has won the Boston Marathon twice before, and she will be eyeing a third title.

Emma Bates will lead the American charge with Keira D’Amato, the former American record-holder, also in the mix.
