Rotich will be competing in the men's 800m at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Reigning Olympic 800m silver medallist Ferguson Rotich has been struggling to maintain his form after his exploits in 2021.

Rotich has been battling a series of injury setbacks and many even thought the 33-year-old has hung his spikes. 2022 was his unlucky year where he failed to make the cut to either the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham or the World Championships in Oregon, USA.

However, he announced his return at the World Championships National Trials last month where he finished third in the 800m to successfully be selected for the national team to Budapest, Hungary. Since then, many have questioned his form and expressed their interest to have other ‘strong’ athletes like Commonwealth Games champion Wycliffe Kinyamal replace him.

However, Rotich believes in his capabilities and has gone ahead to affirm that he is in good shape and ready to replicate his 2021 form. In a post on Golazo’s Facebook page, Rotich said: “I have been out for some time due to injury but I thank God I am now returning to full fitness.

My target is to replicate my 2021 form. We have a very strong team in the 800m and I am optimistic of a good outing in Budapest.”

Rotich will team up with World and Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir, 2021 World Under-20 champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Kipng’etich Ngeno. The four will be hoping to take the 1-2-3-4 slots but it will definitely not be an easy outing with the presence of other strong athletes from Algeria and Canada.

A potential threat to the throne is Canada’s Marco Arop who has been in good shape since the season started. The Algerian duo of Djamel Sedjati and Slimane Moula will also be in the mix.
