Jamaica's athletics federation has responded to the widespread reports about Jamaican athletes transferring allegiance to Turkey.

Jamaica’s track and field has been the talk of the town in recent days following the alleged exodus of field athletes to Turkey.

In an interview on Television Jamaica, a Turkish Consultant confirmed that Jamaican talents Roje Stona and Rajindra Campbell were in the process of switching allegiance.

The consultant further revealed that 2022 World Under-20 champion Jaydon Hibbert is also in the process of obtaining his Turkish passport.

Additional reports further revealed that Wayne Pinnock, the 2023 World Championship and 2024 Paris Olympics silver medallist in the long jump, is also among the top stars bound for Türkiye.

According to Sports Max, the four athletes are set for impressive rewards from the Turkish sporting authorities, facilitated by a prominent American sports agent.

Each athlete will receive a minimum of US$500,000, with monthly stipends and six-figure bonuses for medals earned at global championships. The athletes are also said to have agreed to eight-year contracts, through to the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.

However, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) responded to recent media speculation claiming that the federation has yet to receive any formal request for such a transfer.

The JAAA emphasised that any such move must follow World Athletics' official Transfer of Allegiance regulations.

“The transfer of allegiance of athletes is a process that involves the requisite national federations and requires the approval of World Athletics,” the federation said in a statement.

“The JAAA wishes to inform the public that, to date, it has neither been notified nor received a request for the transfer of allegiance of any of our Jamaican athletes, whether those mentioned in the referenced media reports or any others.

“The JAAA will continue to be guided by the World Athletics Transfer of Allegiance Regulations and will engage with the requisite processes.”

While reports of top Jamaican field athletes switching allegiance to Türkiye have stirred global concern, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association has made it clear that no official steps have been taken to authorise such transfers.

The reported moves have triggered passionate debate within Jamaica’s track and field community. While some fans view the developments as a betrayal of national pride, others see it as a strategic and financial decision for athletes whose earning potential can be short-lived due to injuries or lack of sponsorship.

Even with reported contracts signed and travel documentation in progress, none of the athletes can officially represent another nation until World Athletics ratifies the transfers, a process that includes a waiting period of up to three years unless otherwise waived.

Should the transfers be completed, the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles would mark their first global championship appearances as representatives of Türkiye. All eyes will remain on both the athletes and governing bodies as this situation continues to unfold.
