Elaine Thompson-Herah was notably missing from the Bermuda Grand Prix where she intended to open her season and Paul Doyle, the American Track League founder has explained what happened and the circumstances that led to the Jamaican being ruled out of the event.

Thousands of Jamaican fans in the diaspora were looking forward to watching the fastest woman alive, Elaine Thompson-Herah, make her long-awaited season-opener but things unfolded differently as she was nowhere to be seen.

Thompson-Herah’s last race was at the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting final last season where she finished third and she is yet to toe the line for her first race of the 2024 season.

As the defending Olympic champion in both the 100m and 200m, there is certainly a lot of pressure for her to deliver and fans were waiting to watch her compete at the Bermuda Grand Prix on Sunday after she had confirmed participation.

Following her withdrawal from the event, Paul Doyle, the American Track League founder, decided to clear the air on what really happened and the circumstances that led to the Jamaican being ruled out of the event.

As per the Royal Gazette, Doyle stated that Thompson-Herah’s sponsors had communicated that she was heading to the island, but things unfolded rapidly and the meet organisers were left at crossroads.

“We were told by her sponsors that she would be coming. The sponsors are very involved with her, both from a management and sponsor’s standpoint.

“We were waiting for the management team to officially confirm. Even in the final hours, we tried to get her just to show up.

“She’s pretty disappointed that the news hit, she wanted to be here initially, she’s not here because of circumstances that are out of her control,” Doyle said.

He added that following his conversation with Asafa Powell, the 31-year-old sprint sensation was really looking forward to competing in Bermuda but there were rumors that she was not ready to open her season.

“I’m sure she Elaine wanted to be here, I know Asafa Powell told me he spoke to her, and she really wanted to be here. We hope to see her here next year.

“We were under the impression that she would be here, we've been in negotiations for a long time. As we got closer to the event, we were hearing rumblings that she might not be ready.

“We thought right up until Thursday she would be ready, but then, we were informed that’s not going to be here,” he added.
