The London Marathon witnessed a thrilling battle as Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa outpaced Joyciline Jepkosgei and Dutch Sifan Hassan to claim victory.

Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa sprinted to victory in a thrilling battle at the 45th edition of the London Marathon on Sunday.

Assefa, known for her tactical approach to marathoning, delivered an impeccable performance, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:15:50 to claim the top spot and the women's-only record.

Her victory saw her overcome stiff competition from Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei and Dutch superstar Sifan Hassan, who finished second and third with times of 2:18:43 and 2:18:59, respectively.

Assefa ran a tactical race in a three-way battle with Jekosgei and Hassan.

Assefa and Jepkosgei took charge of proceedings early on as Olympic champion Hassan tucked in behind them.

The trio soon broke away from the chasing pack as the likes of former champion Vivian Cheruiyot failed to track their surge.

The three kept together until the hour mark where Jepkosgei and Assefa broke away from Hassan as the Dutch star struggled to keep up.

The pair took the Olympic champion with increased tempo before the pace setters exited the scene.

It was not until the two-hour mark that Assefa made her move to leave Jepkosgei in the dust, as she stormed to victory.
