ATHLETICS Emmanuel Wanyonyi on how he plans to conquer 800m race this year
The 18-year-old showed his class once again with a dominant victory at the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday.
The 2021 world under-20 800m champion opened his season with a dominant win at the Kip Keino Classic before upsetting the oldies at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco.
Another youngster making huge strides is reigning world under-20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot who also won the Kip Keino Classic dominantly. He then finished second at the LA Grand Prix behind Timothy Cheruiyot.
“At the moment, the transition of young athletes to the senior category is amazing. The juniors have more energy and zeal to perform and that’s a good sign. They have proved themselves especially in the middle and long-distances…it’s a good sign,” he said.
Wanyonyi finished fourth in the 800m at last year’s World Championships in Oregon where he was making his first appearance in the senior category.
He revealed that his main focus at the moment is to build up well and hopefully make the cut to this year’s edition of the global show in Budapest, where he intends to silence the big boys having now gained experience.
“I want to work hard and make Team Kenya first. The rest we shall discuss when I’m in Budapest,” he said.

His next stop will be at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris, France on Friday, June 9 where he intends to maintain the hot streak.
