Harambee Stars fans are upset after an FKF Premier League player celebrated Kenya’s CHAN 2024 elimination, sparking outrage and online curses.

Being 'unpatriotic' has landed Murang’a Seal forward Victor Haki at the center of a storm after a video surfaced online showing him jubilantly celebrating Harambee Stars’ heartbreaking elimination from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The Stars, making their maiden appearance in the continental tournament, were eliminated 4-3 on penalties by Madagascar after a tense quarterfinal clash.

But instead of mourning with the nation, Haki took to TikTok, where he shared a clip of himself reacting gleefully to Kenya’s defeat, a move that has divided opinion among fans and players alike.

“It’s disappointing to see a Murang’a Seal player (Victor Haki) celebrating after Harambee Stars’ loss yesterday,” captain Abud Omar wrote on Instagram.

“That shows a lack of respect – not just to the team, but to the nation and the game itself. We rise together; we fall together. Football should unite us, not divide us. @Victor_khaki, you’re a disgrace to the nation.”

The post went viral within hours, sparking heated debate over the line between club loyalty and national pride.

Many Kenyans condemned Haki’s behavior, calling it shameful, while a minority argued that players are free to express themselves, regardless of the circumstances.

Kenya’s elimination was particularly painful given how close they came to advancing.

Gor Mahia defender Alphonce Omija put Harambee Stars ahead in the knockout clash, sending fans into jubilation.

However, Madagascar clawed back through a penalty from Fenohasina Gilles, forcing the game into extra time and eventually a shootout.

Despite goalkeeper Bryne Omondi saving Toky’s effort, Kenya’s hopes were dashed when Michael Kibwage and Omija both missed from the spot.

The 4-3 shootout defeat ended what had been a fairytale run for the East Africans in their first-ever CHAN campaign.

Fans question professionalism

What might have been remembered as a proud moment for Kenyan football was overshadowed by Haki’s controversial celebration.

Supporters accused the former Nzoia Sugar striker of tarnishing the team’s collective effort with an act they deemed unpatriotic.

Omar’s stern rebuke was echoed widely, with fans flooding social media timelines to demand accountability and professionalism from players.

Many pointed out that representing Kenya goes beyond club rivalries, stressing that footballers have a responsibility to inspire unity.

“It’s not about Murang’a Seal or Gor Mahia here. It’s about Kenya,” one supporter commented under the viral video.

When the flag is on your chest, you put aside your differences. Haki failed us all.”
