Botswana politicians have been slammed over their decision to hog the limelight at the expense of the country’s world beating athletes who won historic gold medals in Tokyo.

Botswana government officials have come under fire following a photo taken with the country’s gold medalists from the 2025 World Championships.

Team Botswana won gold in 400m courtesy of Collen Kebinatshipi before the sprinter anchored their 4x400m relay team to another gold medal alongside Letsile Tebogo, Lee Eppie and Bayapo Ndori.

That has seen the sprinters lauded as they delivered Botswana’s first-ever titles from the World Championships and the government celebrated them in different ways.

Among those who met the athletes are the country’s political leaders, including Speaker of Parliament Dithapelo Keorapetse and Sports Minister Jacob Kelebeng, and they posed for a photo with the champions but the manner they did it has sent tongues wagging.

This is because the leaders opted to be in front with the athletes tucked behind, some not even captured well in the photo, leading to criticism that the politicians were stealing the spotlight from the men and women who made the country proud.

“Put the champions in front,” American 400m star, Vernon Norwood commented on the photo on X, following his comment by an angry face emoji, with several others agreeing with his assessment.

“Mme gone who are these people in front? I only know the Speaker of the National Assembly and I can't figure out why is he standing in front of the athletes,” another observer from Botswana commented.

“Exactly, now it is like the winners are the ones in front ...what a hack.” “Speak louder sir, maybe they will see, hear and understand the importance of our champions.”

“We can’t see the winners here? Aren’t they supposed to be in front??” posed another user. “Always finding ways to make it about themselves. Shameful!”

Kebinatshipi was the surprise winner of the 400m world champion in Tokyo and put the icing on the cake with another scorching run in the final leg of the 4x400m relay as Botswana tasted gold for the first time at the World Championships.

Following the heroics, the country declared Monday September 29 a public holiday to celebrate the historic achievement.
