In February 2019, aged just 17, Athing Mu broke the American women's record in 600m at the 2019 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 1:23.57. She bested the previous American women's record of 1:23.59 held by Alysia Montaoo and nearly broke the women's world record of 1:23.44, held by Olga Kotlyarova.

Exactly two years later, Athing Mu ran indoor in 50.52 seconds in the women's 400m which was 0.3 seconds faster than Sanya Richards' official world under-20 record ratified by World Athletics although it was slower than the 50.36 seconds set by fellow American Sydney McLaughlin, which was not able to meet the standards for world record ratification.

The same month, she ran 1:58.40 in the 800m to set an indoor collegiate and world under-20 record, beating the previous mark by more than two seconds, setting her up for what was to come next.

With the delayed Toyo 2020 Olympics coming in 2021, Athing Mu sent a major warning when she clocked a world leading 1:56.07 in 800m, the second-fastest result in American history, as she qualified after winning the race.

At the Tokyo Games, she won two gold medals in 800m and women's 4x400m relay but it was in the former where her might was felt.

In the women’s 800m, Athing Mu led from gun to tape in dominant fashion, finishing clear ahead of Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson and American compatriot Raevyn Rogers, while breaking the American women's 800m record after clocking 1:55.21 seconds, ending a 53-year Olympic drought for Team USA.

The last American woman who had won the event was Madeline Manning at the 1968 Mexico Olympics (first Olympic 800m male or female win since Dave Wottle at the Munich 1972). Athing Mu became also the youngest American woman to win an individual Olympic track and field title since Wyomia Tyus earned the 100m title at the 1964 Tokyo Games.

Having won her first Olympics title, the spotlight and pressure was on Athing Mu to do the same at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon and she did not disappoint.

In that race in July 2022, Athing Mu shrugged off the challenge of Keely Hodgkinson to take the women's 800m gold with a world-leading time of 1:56.30. She won by 0.08 seconds after a tight finish on the home stretch, with Kenya’s Mary Moraa trailing in third.

Athing Mu became the first American woman to win the 800m world championship title, and the youngest woman in history to own Olympic and world titles in an individual track and field event.

From September 2019, Athing Mu went on a four-year unbeaten run in 800m that left fans stunned.

Athing Mu won and won and won, claiming victories at Olympics and World Championships as well as the Diamond League until the 2023 World Championships when she finished third.

That came after a long time out with doubts over whether she would participate at the Worlds in Budapest, Hungary.

However, since then, she was never the same as she struggled with injuries in early 2024 before missing out on Paris Olympics after an unfortunate fall while leading her race at the US Olympics trials.

Still, her long unbeaten run left no doubt that she is a track legend in the making.

These records exemplified her remarkable talents, once again proving why she is a track legend in the making.
