Despite being knocked out in the Round of 16, Bafana Bafana still secured a significant financial reward from their AFCON 2025 campaign.

South Africa's national team, Bafana Bafana, entered the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco with high expectations following their bronze-medal success in the previous edition.

While the tournament featured a record-breaking prize pool, South Africa’s financial haul was ultimately determined by their knockout stage exit.

Under the leadership of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, the 2025 tournament saw a massive financial boost. The total prize money for the competition was set at $32 million (approximately R580 million).

The biggest headline was the 43% increase for the eventual champions, who were set to walk away with a staggering $10 million (R180 million).

For Bafana Bafana, the goal was to surpass their 2023 performance and secure the top prize. However, the CAF structure ensures that even teams falling short of the final receive significant compensation to support national football development.

AFCON 2025: Bafana Bafana’s Final Earnings

South Africa’s journey in Morocco saw them navigate a challenging Group B alongside Egypt, Angola, and Zimbabwe. After securing their spot in the knockout rounds, Bafana Bafana faced a tough Round of 16 clash against Cameroon on January 4, 2026.

Despite a valiant effort, South Africa was eliminated by the Indomitable Lions. According to the official CAF prize money breakdown for 2025, teams that exit in the Round of 16 are awarded $800,000.

When converted to South African Rand, Bafana Bafana walked away with approximately R14.5 million. While this is a significant sum, it is a decrease from the $2.5 million (R41 million) they earned for their third-place finish in the 2023 edition.

AFCON 2025: A Foundation for the Future

Though the R14.5 million payout may feel modest compared to the $10 million jackpot reserved for the winners, the funds remain vital for the South African Football Association (SAFA).

This revenue is typically earmarked for covering tournament logistics and player bonuses. Some of the money will also be used in investing in youth development and grassroots programs, and funding the technical preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Bafana Bafana’s exit in the first knockout round marks a period of reflection for Hugo Broos and his squad. While the financial reward provides a safety net, the team will undoubtedly be looking toward the 2027 edition to reclaim its spot among Africa’s financial and competitive elite. They will also be looking to right their wrongs ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
