Canada's Evan Dunfee was the first athlete to be crowned a world champion in Tokyo, claiming a hard-fought gold in the men’s 35km race walk.
Spain's Maria Perez successfully defended her title in the women's 35km race walk, dominating the field to secure gold.
In the sprints, the men's 100m heats provided some blistering times. South Africa's Gift Leotlela and Nigeria's Kayinsola Ajayi both clocked personal bests of 9.87 and 9.88 seconds, respectively, to lead the early charge.
