What Super Eagles legend Jay Jay Okocha told me — Alex Iwobi

Nigerian playmaker Alex Iwobi recently shared insights into how his maternal uncle, Jay Jay Okocha, a Super Eagles legend, has profoundly influenced his life both on and off the pitch. 

In an interview with the Telegraph, Iwobi discussed Okocha's role in shaping his identity as a footballer, musician, and fashion enthusiast.

Iwobi's performance this season with Fulham has been nothing short of impressive across competitions. 

He has already scored five goals and provided three assists for Marco Silva’s Cottagers after just 17 matches and is on course for arguably his best-ever season. 

His ability to thrive under pressure and express himself on the field reflects the lessons learned from Okocha

Speaking about his life, Iwobi emphasised the importance of self-expression that Okocha instilled in him. 

"He always told me to express myself and play with a smile on my face," Iwobi noted, reflecting on how this way of life contributed to his current form on the field. 

He pointed out that Okocha's ability to maintain his flair even under coaches like Sam Allardyce—who was not known for favouring creative players like the African legend—served as an important lesson. 

"It showed me that being myself, being who you are, you get accepted," he added.

In addition to football, Iwobi has pursued a passion for music, particularly rap. He also explained how he manages to juggle his football commitments with his musical endeavours, attributing part of his success to the freedom of expression encouraged by big uncle Okocha.

Through his relationship with Jay Jay Okocha, Iwobi has not only embraced his Nigerian heritage but has also developed a unique style that combines football and music.
