‘We saved the club’ - Laporta believes his administration have rescued Barcelona's finances
Barcelona’s Joan Laporta has declared that he and his administration of Barcelona directors have saved the club from the precarious financial situation they found themselves in when they took over.
Laporta believes summer measures have saved Barcelona
In a press conference, Laporta claimed that the summer levers used by the club, as well as player sales during his tenure as president, meant that Barcelona was close to being financially secure.
According to Laporta, “We (Barcelona) have signed players for €215m and sold for €141m, we made a competitive team for €74m.
“We’ve reduced the wage bill by around €100m, and so we’re planning to reduce another €70m. We’ve saved Barcelona from financial ruin, yes."
He did not speak in detail on the club’s current debt situation, but did mention that he believed the club to be on the right track to being financially stable again.
Laporta believes Barcelona is in control of its finances
He added that the measures that the club has taken so far have put Barcelona back “in control” of its finances and the club was now growing economically.
"I want to talk about the economic situation. We saved the club, we took decisions to reduce debts and now we are in control." He said, before adding “we have had attendance records in the 'ticketing' of the Palau and the Camp Nou, also an unprecedented increase in visits to the museum and in the sale of shirts. It is an indication of our economic growth."
Laporta took over as Barcelona president with the club in financial ruin after years of mismanagement from the former administration led by Jose Maria Bartomeu, but he has overseen a turnaround for the club, managing to keep the team competititve with numerous signings in just over one year in charge of the club.
