'We are responsible for majority of the bill' - GST League venue director reveals re-laid $800,000 Jamaican stadium track was joint effort

Following the completion of the re-laid Jamaican National Stadium track, Grand Slam Track (GST) venue director Don Lockerbie has revealed that the League organisers are responsible for majority of the reported over $800,000 bill.

The newly resurfaced track laid ahead of the prestigious CHAMPS this week will also host the first Slam of Michael Johnson's highly anticipated $30m Grand Slam Track (GST) League set for April 4-6.

In an interview with Prime Time Sports, Lockerbie disclosed that the reported bill was a joint effort as part of their long-term commitment to Jamaica.

"I can confirm that we are responsible for the majority of the bill and we are glad to do it as part of our long-term relationship and partnership with Jamaica," said Lockerbie.

The re-laid track is adorned with the vibrant black, green, and gold colors of the Jamaican flag, and according to reports, the new surface will be from Rekortan. 

Pictures that have surfaced online show the changeover zones are coloured yellow/gold, the rest of the track green, and the field areas in black.

Grand Slam Track (GST) League, created by four-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson, will feature four track meets - AKA Slams, where signed Racers and appearing Challengers will compete head-to-head in two events over the two-day competition.

Racers will receive base compensation for competing in each Slam and can earn additional prize money based on their performances. 96 total athletes (48 Racers and 48 Challengers) are expected to compete in each Grand Slam with a prize pot of $12.6 million and the category winners of the Slam will win $100,000.

Some Jamaican track stars registered for the prestigious GST League include world indoor 60mH bronze medallist Ackera Nugent, sprint sensation Ackeem Blake, and other world stars such as Olympic champions Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas, and Masai Russell.
