‘This has been dragging on since March’ - Ex-Super Eagles coach expresses frustration over sanction delay

FIFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association (SAFA) after Bafana Bafana allegedly fielded an ineligible player.

South Africa is under investigation because Teboho Mokoena, who should have been suspended for yellow card accumulation during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 28-year-old was supposed to serve a one-match ban after receiving yellow cards against Benin in November 2023 and Zimbabwe in June 2024.

Despite the suspension, he was named in the starting lineup for the match against Lesotho on March 21, which South Africa won 2-0.

Benin's coach, Rohr, has revealed that he is pleased with the investigation but expressed frustration over the delay.

"This has been dragging on since March. This matter should have been resolved earlier," Rohr told YOP L-FRII.

"If the rules are strictly applied, with the goal average rule, we would be top of the group, level on points with South Africa, but with one more goal.

"The schedule doesn't favour us. We still have two difficult away games, including one against Rwanda, who still have a chance of qualifying," he said.

"Meanwhile, South Africa will play its last two matches at home, with less fatigue and the support of its home crowd. We remain outsiders, but this decision gives us some hope."

Although Lesotho did not file an appeal within the required timeframe, FIFA has the authority to investigate and act independently.

The case is now before FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, which will decide on the appropriate penalty. Potential consequences for South Africa include forfeiting the match, which would result in Lesotho being awarded a 3-0 victory and three points. 

FIFA could add more sanctions, such as a fine or further suspensions. If FIFA rules in Lesotho's favour, Benin would draw level with Bafana Bafana on 14 points but move ahead on goal difference. This would leave both teams three points clear of third-placed Nigeria.
