MC Alger face Sundowns in a crucial CAF Champions League match on Saturday, a game the South African side must win to make it to the quarter-final, as anything else will see them crash out at the group stage for the first time since 2018.

However, the days leading to the match have been dominated by claims that Sundowns analyst Mario Masha, who has since been suspended by the club, has been leaking tactical information to Mokwena.

Sundowns are still conducting investigation into the matter but Mokwena, a former Sundowns coach, has come out to deny the claims, stating that at no point did he talk about his ex-side during his conversations with Masha, who has been at the club since 2015.

“Reputation is built over years of conduct and not anonymous screenshots,” Mokwena said on Friday.

“Let me state this very clear, Mario has not given me any tactical confidential information about Sundowns.”

The MC Alger coach says his conversations with Masha centered around the analyst’s recent coaching license, having completed a UEFA ‘A’ Diploma course at the Scottish Football Association this month.

What Did Rulani and Mario Discuss?

“The conversations referenced were professional football discussions, some personal, relating to his UEFA Licenses, which he asked me to help him share through different methodologies, previous work done together at Mamelodi Sundowns,” added Mokwena.

“And different tactical details that include European examples such as those from Manchester City. At no point were current Sundowns’ tactical plans or confidential material shared with me,” he insisted.

The claims have added an extra spark to the high stakes match set to be staged at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday.

Sundowns head into the clash third in their group with six points, one ahead of St Eloi Lupopo, with Al Hilal leading with eight while MC Alger have seven. A draw or win for the Algerian champions will dump Sundowns out.
