The annual event brings together female student-athletes from across the country in a celebration of talent, competition, and empowerment through sport.

In line with global celebrations of International Women’s Day on March 8, KUSF traditionally organises women-only championships to mark the occasion.

According to KUSF Secretary General Joan Adalo, the federation uses sport as a powerful platform to honour and celebrate women in higher education institutions.

“This is a women-only championship held in the spirit of International Women’s Day to celebrate women through sports in all our universities,” Adalo said.

She explained that the event not only promotes competition but also reinforces inclusion, visibility, and opportunities for female athletes across the university system.

Wide Representation Across Universities

This year’s tournament has attracted participation from a broad range of institutions, including hosts Taita Taveta University (TTU), as well as the Kenyatta University (KU), University of Nairobi (UoN), Mount Kenya University (MKU), Kabarak University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT).

Adalo noted that the diversity of sports ensures broad participation and provides opportunities for athletes with different talents to showcase their skills.

However, she confirmed that swimming will not be included in this year’s edition, marking the first time the sport will be absent from the competition.

“This time we are missing swimming for the very first time since the hosts are not able to provide the facilities,” she explained.

Leadership Commitment to Women’s Sports Development

KUSF President Alfred Kibet Rono emphasised that the championships play a vital role in strengthening women’s sports within universities.

He stated that the federation remains committed to creating platforms that encourage participation, development, and competitive growth among female athletes.

“Our aim is to support women in sports in our universities. Looking at the entries, we expect tough competition,” Rono said.

He added that the growing number of participating institutions reflects the increasing recognition of women’s sports and the importance of structured competition at university level.

The KUSF Women Championships continue to serve as an important fixture in the university sports calendar, combining competitive excellence with advocacy for gender equality in sport.
