Onana set to double his salary as he plots escape from Manchester United
Andre Onana is set to swap Old Trafford for Turkey, with the Manchester United goalkeeper agreeing a loan move to Trabzonspor that will see his salary double.
The Cameroon international has been given the green light to leave after falling down the pecking order, and the deal is expected to be completed before the Turkish transfer window closes on Friday.
Trabzonspor deal hands Onana pay boost
Onana’s move to Trabzonspor comes with no loan fee for United and no option for the Turkish side to make it permanent, but the 29-year-old will pocket a huge pay rise thanks to bonuses and a signing-on fee.
The deal accelerated once Trabzonspor began offloading their keeper Ugurcan Cakir to Galatasaray, leaving them in urgent need of a replacement.
For Onana, who missed pre-season with a hamstring injury and has struggled for form since arriving from Inter Milan for £47.2m, the move represents both a fresh start and financial security.
United’s patience with the shot-stopper has worn thin after a string of high-profile errors, including his latest in the Carabao Cup humiliation at Grimsby Town.
With Altay Bayindir starting all three Premier League matches so far and the £21.7m arrival of Senne Lammens from Antwerp, Onana has been nudged towards the exit door despite having three years left on his contract.
Manchester United ready to move on with new No.1
Although there were claims earlier this summer that United intended to keep Onana, the club’s transfer moves told a different story.
The pursuit of Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez, the decision to sign Lammens, and even the £30m price quoted to Monaco all suggested that his place was under threat.
Now, his departure clears the way for Lammens to establish himself as United’s new first-choice goalkeeper, with Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton providing depth.
For Onana, this switch to Turkey could be the reset he badly needs. Once tipped to be United’s long-term No.1, he will now look to rebuild his confidence away from the spotlight of the Premier League, even if only temporarily.
