President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to the Super Eagles for keeping Nigeria's 2026 FIFA World Cup aspirations alive.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria thrashed the Cheetahs 4-0 at the Godwin Apkabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday afternoon.

A remarkable performance from star player Victor Osimhen saw the striker score a hat-trick before Frank Onyeka sealed the win. 

The win secured Nigeria's entry into the African playoffs, giving them a chance of qualification for the next World Cup.

What Tinubu said

In a statement released Tuesday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the Super Eagles for restoring the hopes of millions of football fans across the nation.

"While the job is not yet complete, I join millions of Nigerian football fans in wishing our team every success in the playoffs," the president stated.

"The mood across the country reflects a shared belief that Nigeria deserves a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada, Mexico, and the United States will host."

"As your president, I assure you and the coaching crew of the federal government’s support as you strive to secure your place at the tournament. 

“Nigerians everywhere believe in you, and I do too. We look forward to seeing you fly our flag proudly on the world stage."

Nigeria now advances to the CAF playoffs, where they will compete with the three other best-ranked second-place teams from the nine qualifying groups.

The playoff tournament will follow a knockout format, with the winner proceeding to a FIFA inter-confederation playoff for a chance to claim one of the final World Cup spots.

This crucial second round of CAF qualifiers is scheduled to be held in Morocco from November 10 to 18.
