Nigeria Super Eagles players who suffered shock defeat to Rwanda in Uyo - Where are they now?
The Nigeria Super Eagles suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Rwanda in Uyo during their last AFCON 2025 qualifier encounter, and ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier rematch, Pulse Sports takes a look back at the players involved in that unexpected loss and where their careers have taken them since.
Under Augustine Eguavoen’s leadership, the team had already secured their ticket to the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco at that time but struggled to control the game despite an early second-half lead.
Nigeria conceded two goals in just three minutes, ending their unbeaten streak in the qualifiers. Here is the current status of some key players from that match:
Maduka Okoye:
The Super Eagles goalkeeper, who conceded twice in that game, made his first appearance for Nigeria in two years as a replacement for Stanley Nwabali.
Currently, the Serie A and Udinese stopper is serving a suspension related to betting violations.

Bright Osayi-Samuel
Still part of the national team and currently training in Uyo for the upcoming fixture, Osayi-Samuel switched clubs last year, moving from Fenerbahce to Championship side Birmingham City.
Gabriel Osho
Osho had a subpar performance in the Uyo match and has not been recalled since.
At club level, he has returned to England following a brief stint with Auxerre in France's Ligue 1.
Bruno Onyemaechi: The left-back remains in the Super Eagles setup and is expected to feature again under coach Eric Chelle soon.
Raphael Onyedika, Wilfred Ndidi, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru: All remain active members of the Super Eagles squad.
But Ndidi recently left Leicester City for Turkish football following a move to Super Lig giants Besiktas.
Alhassan Yusuf and Kelechi Iheanacho: Neither is in the current squad. Yusuf plays in the MLS, while Iheanacho, after Sevilla terminated his contract, reunited with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
Moses Simon, Victor Moses, Samuel Chukwueze, and Frank Onyeka
These players continue to represent the Super Eagles but have experienced club changes.
Simon now plays for Paris FC, Osimhen has signed permanently with Galatasaray, Chukwueze has moved to Fulham, and Onyeka returned to Brentford.
Victor Boniface: Recently joined Werder Bremen but is not considered by coach Chelle for the current match window.
This snapshot shows the evolving paths of Nigeria’s national team players since that surprising defeat to Rwanda, as they prepare to meet the same opponents once again in a high-stakes World Cup qualifying encounter on Saturday at the same venue.
