Musingu Bite Again to Keep Western Football Crown After Stinging Ebwali

Musingu Boys’ High School from Kakamega County have retained their Western Region boys’ football title after seeing off Ebwali Secondary 2–0 in a pulsating final played on Sunday at the Mumias Complex.

The Scorpions showed their class early by scoring twice in the first half to put the contest beyond doubt and stamp their authority as the kings of Western football.

Musingu's victory ensures they head to the national championships carrying the tag of regional champions, a title they will be determined to defend against the best in Kenya.

But the final itself almost never happened on schedule. Just before kickoff, Kibabii Boys from Bungoma County staged a dramatic protest, staging a sit-in on the pitch to demand a replay of their controversial semifinal against Musingu.

That match had been abandoned in extra time after chaotic scenes broke out when a disputed penalty decision was awarded to Musingu, sparking fan trouble and halting proceedings.

Match officials and regional sports administrators intervened to calm tempers and persuade Kibabii to vacate the pitch.

After nearly an hour’s delay, the final proceeded without further incident, though the fallout from the semifinal drama is expected to generate further debate.

Despite the protest, Musingu and Ebwali both secured qualification to the national school games by virtue of reaching the final. Western Region will host the nationals, giving the teams a crucial home advantage as they target glory on the bigger stage.

In the girls’ football category, Butere Girls and Madira Girls booked their tickets to the nationals after impressive performances throughout the regional championship.

Other disciplines also saw Western heavyweights maintain their dominance. In volleyball, Malava Boys from Kakamega County were crowned regional champions in the boys’ category, while Bsp Sulumeti, also from Kakamega, topped the girls’ volleyball contest.

St Peters Mumias underlined their pedigree in rugby sevens by lifting the boys’ title, while Mwira Secondary, another Kakamega side, triumphed in the girls’ rugby sevens competition.
