The four-time champion is reportedly set to be sidelined for three to four weeks due to sciatica on his right side, according to reports.

This marks the first time in his legendary 23-year career that James will miss a season opener. News of the injury follows earlier reports this week that James was dealing with nerve irritation in his glute, which was already expected to keep him out for the entire NBA preseason.

Last season, James, now 40, had another standout year, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game.

During the offseason, his decision to opt into his $52.6 million player option to remain with the Lakers fueled speculation about his future, including potential retirement or a move to another team next year.

Speaking at the Lakers’ media day, James made his current focus clear: “I’m excited about today. I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season.

" I’m super-invested because I don’t know when the end is. I know it’s a lot sooner than later.”

The Lakers are scheduled to tip off the 2025-26 NBA season against Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors on October 21st.
