Kenya Women's Team Wrap Up Africa Wheelchair Basketball Championships with Strong Victory
Kenya’s women’s national 5×5 wheelchair basketball team ended their Africa Wheelchair Basketball Championships campaign in Luanda, Angola, on a high note after thrashing Liberia 65–5 to secure fifth place overall.
The result marked Kenya’s second dominant victory over Liberia in the tournament, following an earlier 89–2 win in the group stage. The strong finish came after a challenging run of fixtures against Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, and hosts Angola.
Libese Reflects on Team Development
Head coach Sarah Libese praised her players but acknowledged the ongoing rebuilding process, pointing to the inexperience within the squad as a key factor in their performances.
“The ladies are a work in progress. We are trying to integrate many talented youngsters in here; most of them have never been outside the country and have no international experience," said Libese.
“With more games internationally, we will achieve our goal. It's a process we are now undertaking that has a low beginning, but a higher ending," she added.
Liberia head coach Benedict Cole also praised Kenya’s quality, saying his young side gained valuable experience from their first international tournament despite failing to register a win.
“Our Federation is only a year old, and so is the national team. This is our first international outing, so I don't expect much from my girls, but I am out here to learn, and Kenya has really taught me a lot," Benedict Cole said.
Final Standings Confirm Group Outcome
Algeria topped the standings with a perfect record (5–0), followed by South Africa (4–1), Angola (3–2), and Morocco (2–3), all progressing to the semi-finals. Kenya finished fifth with one win and four losses, while Liberia ended bottom after five defeats.
In the men’s category, Kenya showed resilience against a physically superior Egyptian side at Pavilhao Multiuso de Kilamba. Despite a competitive display, they eventually lost 48–38 after Egypt pulled away in the second half.
