Kenya national women’s handball team poised for African Championships showdown in DRC

The Kenya National Women’s Handball Team is ramping up its preparations for the upcoming African Championships set to take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from November 27 to December 7.

As the 26th edition of the tournament approaches, the team is training intensively at Nyayo Stadium in anticipation for the competition.

Kenya has been placed in Pool A of the tournament, alongside strong contenders including Congo, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Cape Verde.

This competitive group will test the team’s abilities and resilience as they aim to make a significant impact in the championships.

The provisional squad consists of 26 players representing various local teams, including Daystar University, Ulinzi, and Nairobi Water with head coach Jack Ochieng poised to select the final 16 players.

The Kenyan team is set to kick off their campaign with an opening fixture against Senegal on November 27.

This match will be pivotal as they look to establish momentum right from the start.

The tournament features a total of 12 teams, with Kenya’s group facing stiff competition not only from fellow pool members but also from teams in Group B, which includes the hosts DRC, as well as Angola, Tunisia, Guinea, Cameroon, and Uganda.

Preliminary matches will take place until December 3, followed by knockout rounds for the qualifying teams.

In their previous appearance at the African Championships in 2021, the Kenyan team secured 10th place.
