Kaizer Chiefs Legend Explains Why Pitso Mosimane Could Be a Complicated Coaching Choice
Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabiso ‘Skapie’ Malatsi has called for a coaching change at the club, suggesting that co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef should be dismissed if they lose the upcoming Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, as he explained why Pitso Mosimane will not be a good fit.
The Glamour Boys' season, which once held promise, is now on the verge of becoming another disappointing campaign.
The team has already been eliminated from the Nedbank Cup in the first round and narrowly missed advancing from the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.
Their league title aspirations also took a significant hit following a 2-1 loss to Stellenbosch. The defeat left Chiefs in fourth place, trailing league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and second-placed Orlando Pirates by eight points.
With the crucial Soweto derby looming on Saturday, many Amakhosi supporters fear that another loss could definitively end their challenge for the Betway Premiership title.
Kaizer Chiefs Legend Explains Why Dan "Dance" Malesela is Better Than Pitso Mosimane
In an interview with Soccer Laduma, Malatsi argued that a derby loss should trigger a coaching overhaul at Naturena. He began by placing blame on the team's senior players for the current slump.
"Senior players should stand up; we're really lacking in that department," Malatsi stated. "These boys don't want to show up. What I've noticed is that these boys hide too much. No one wants to take responsibility, no one is calling for the ball, so they don't get blamed by the coaches."
Malatsi was unequivocal about the future of the current coaching staff should they fail to secure a result against their arch-rivals.
"These co-coaches have to go if they lose the derby; they have let us down," he continued. "One thing I always say is there's only one person who can solve Chiefs' problems."
He proposed two potential candidates to take the helm, highlighting Dan "Dance" Malesela as a coach whose philosophy aligns with the club's traditional style of "ushukela" (entertaining football).
"Even with these current players, he can do better. Dan 'Dance' Malesela can be the right candidate because his philosophy is the same as Chiefs'," Malatsi explained. "Because there's no longer 'ushukela' at Chiefs, there should be flavour at Chiefs."
Malatsi also mentioned renowned coach Pitso Mosimane as a viable option, though he noted that Mosimane would likely demand a complete squad overhaul.
"Even Pitso can be right, but obviously Pitso would want to change the players, he can even change the whole squad," he suggested.
"They should try Dan 'Dance' and focus again with players from development, because you can see there's hope with players like Thulani Mabaso."
