‘It was an honour’ - Super Eagles defender laments following Finidi George’s resignation
Sodiq Ismail who plays for Remo Stars recently gained his first call-up to the Nigeria national team from Finidi.
He made his debut coming in as a substitute during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic.
However, shortly after, coach Finidi quit due to the Nigeria Football Federation's appointment of a foreign Technical Adviser to his position as manager.
Ismail on Finidi’s resignation
Finidi's resignation has been regretted by Ismail, who expressed his sadness and hope that he would be able to pick up some tips from the incoming management.
Ismail told Sportsboom, “I’m saddened by the coach’s resignation. However, I hope to learn from the new manager and his team when they come on board.”
Finidi's precise instructions during his debut game were lauded by Ismail, who is known for his offensive exploits even as a right-back.
The youngster said, “The coach’s instructions for me in the game were simple and clear. He told me, Ismail, when you have the ball, just deliver it inside the box.”
“It was an honour to represent my country, and I believe it will significantly benefit my career,”
After just two games in charge, Finidi resigned from his position as the Super Eagles head coach in June.
The Nigeria Football Federation decided to seek a foreign technical adviser due to the team's substandard performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
