Hellen Obiri stunned a strong field to claim the New York City Half Marathon title on Sunday, March 15, ahead of Sharon Lokedi and Megan Keith.

Agnes Ngetich, Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi entered the race as favourites to dominate, thanks to their impressive road running resume.

Agnes Ngetich, the second-fastest woman in the half-marathon, has enjoyed a great buildup to the 21km race, having won the World Cross Country Championships senior women’s title and Sirikwa Classic Cross Country title.

Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi were opening their seasons in New York, with the former preparing for her debut at the London Marathon. Sharon Lokedi is looking forward to defending her Boston Marathon title.

New York City Half Marathon Women's Results

Passing the 5km mark, Agnes Ngetich was running in the lead, with two-time New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri running closely.

Fentayeh Belayneh of Ethiopia and Boston Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi were also in the lead. Megan Keith, making her half-marathon debut, was also running with the leading group.

Passing the 10km mark, Agnes Ngetich, the reigning World Cross Country champion, was still in the lead, with Hellen Obiri running just beside her. Sharon Lokedi had now climbed to third place, with the Ethiopian running just behind the Kenyan trio.

Hellen Obiri then took charge in the 15km mark, with Agnes Ngetich running just behind her. Megan Keith had now climbed to third and was battling it out for a good spot with Sharon Lokedi.

Two-time Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri was first to cross the 20km mark, and it was evident she would take the win, owing to her long strides. She eventually claimed top honours in the race, crossing the finish line in 1:06:33. Sharon Lokedi came in second, crossing the finish line in 1:07:10 as debutant Megan Keith rounded up the podium in 1:07:13.

New York City Half Marathon Men's Results

Passing the 5km mark, the men were led by the American Joe Klecker. Patrick Denver of Great Britain and Kenya’s Patrick Kiprop were also in the leading group.

Shunsuke Kuwata and Daniel Ebenyo were closely behind the trio. Grant Fisher, who is making his debut, was also in the leading group.

American Zouhair Talbi was in the lead, passing the 10km mark with Shunsuke Kuwata running in second. Patrick Kiprop and India’s Gulveer Singh were also in the lead.

Patrick Kiprop had taken charge of the men’s race, passing the 15km mark. Shunsuke Kiwata was in second place with Gulveer Singh also in the lead.

Adriaan Wildschutt came from behind to take charge, passing the 20km mark and eventually went on to claim the victory in 59:30. American Zouhair Talbi finished second in 59:41 with Gulveer Singh taking third in 59:42.
