Harambee Stars striker Jonah Ayunga remains confident that St Mirren will get their campaign back on track after a poor run that has left them closer to the relegation zone.

St Mirren are ninth on the 12-team Scottish Premiership with 14 points, just two better than Kilmarnock and Dundee United, who occupy 10th and 11th positions, following a string of poor results that has seen them win just one of their last nine league games.

That victory came last Saturday when they beat Dundee United 2-0 and it has left Ayunga believing that a turnaround is possible so that they can begin to climb up the table.

What is Giving Ayunga Hope?

“We are down there and it is still early days in the league,” Ayunga told the Daily Record. “We know if we can stick a few results together, we can climb the table again, that is our aim. This is a positive result and if we can build on it, we’ll start moving upwards.”

St Mirren have been challenging for European positions in recent seasons and this is something Ayunga believes is within reach even with their bad spell of results that leaves them 12 points behind Rangers, who occupy the final European qualification position.

“Our performances have all been good up to this point apart from at Dundee,” he said.

“We have genuinely been in every game; results just haven’t gone our way. The positivity has not gone anywhere. We have watched the clips and the analysis, it is not as if we are scratching our heads wondering how to improve. We know what to do, and it will happen.”

Kenyan Striker Eyes More Goals

The 28-year-old forward has two goals in 22 games this season, both coming from 15 league matches, the second one scored on December 3 during a 3-3 draw with Aberdeen.

Ayunga feels that can be the catalyst for a major turnaround for St Mirren and hopes the other strikers also weigh in with goals.

“Only my second goal, it came at last. I was happy with the finish. I feel like I have been getting chances and all you can do is hit the target. We have been practicing, and today we bailed out the boys by scoring. It was about time.”

St Mirren have a tough match coming up next as they will face champions Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday, a game that gives Ayunga a chance to lift a trophy.
