Germany coach Flick backs himself to continue as manager despite Japan disgrace

After losing to Japan twice in less than a year, Germany head coach Hansi Flick’s job is considered under threat, but the former Bayern Munich manager still believes that he is the best man for the job. 

Germany lost to Japan in the Group Stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and subsequently got dumped out of the competition’s first round. 

Flick’s job was considered to be under minor threat, but the DFB decided to stick with the 58-year-old manager, who is building a squad to compete at the 2024 Euros being hosted by Germany. 

However, recent results, including only one win in their last six matches, have seen Flick’s popularity waver even more, and the former Bayern Munich coach has seen calls for his sack after the latest 4-1 loss to Japan. 

Germany have lost four of their last six matches since the World Cup and have not claimed a win since March this year, but Flick is adamant that he should continue in his post and see out his contract. 

Speaking after Germany’s loss to Japan, Flick said to SPORT1, “I still feel I’m the right man for Germany job. But I also know that football is dynamic. So, I can’t predict what happens next. 

“Me and my staff, we’re doing our best to prepare the squad in a perfect way.”

Flick’s contract with Germany runs until July 2024, but given the state of the national team, he would be lucky to see it out.
