Following the shocking demise of Gor Mahia patron and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Football Kenya Federation has put a temporary halt to league matches.

The FKF has suspended all league fixtures in the next seven days as the nation mourns the untimely death of the political maverick, who died following a cardiac arrest in India, on Wednesday morning.

President William Ruto confirmed Odinga’s death while announcing a seven-day mourning period for the nation in honour of the man who is credited with expanding the democratic space in the country as well as the birth of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

“Following the Government’s declaration of seven days of National Mourning in honour of the late former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all league fixtures scheduled during this period,” FKF said through a statement.

Which Teams Did Raila Odinga Support?

“We join the nation in mourning a great leader and a passionate supporter of Kenyan football. May his soul rest in peace.”

Odinga was an ardent football fan who turned up regularly in the stadiums to support either his beloved Gor Mahia or Harambee Stars.

He was the long-serving patron of K’Ogalo, a club he supported not just with his heart but his resources as well, while internationally, he paid allegiance to English Premier League side Arsenal.

Following the suspension, matches will not be played this weekend as well as next midweek with the expected return slated between October 24 and 26.
