World 3000m steeplechase bronze medallist Edmund Serem has expressed his excitement after bagging the World Athletics Rising Star of the Year Award.

The prestigious awards were presented at a gala ceremony in Monaco on Sunday night, November 31, recognising their dominant performances throughout the year.

Edmund Serem capped his 2025 season with a bronze medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The youngster finished behind New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish and Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali. Edmund Serem also placed second in the Diamond League final and recorded top-four finishes in four other Diamond League races.

Edmund Serem won the award alongside fellow youngster Zhang Jiale, who broke the world U20 hammer record with a 77.24m throw at the Chinese Championships in Quzhou.

She went on to claim bronze at the World Championships in Tokyo, recording 77.10m to join Canada’s Camryn Rogers and China’s Zhao Jie on the podium.

Edmund Serem Reacts to World Athletics Award

In a post on his Facebook page after the recognition, Edmund Serem expressed elation, noting that it was a dream come true to be honoured in such a way.

He pointed out that the journey does not stop there, with his main focus on making more impact next season and hopefully getting the same recognition.

World Athletics Awards: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Mondo Duplantis Reign Supreme

Meanwhile, aside from Edmund Serem being recognised, world champions Mondo Duplantis and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone were also named the 2025 World Athletes of the Year, capping off a spectacular season for both stars.

The Swedish pole vault sensation and the American sprint phenom were the top honorees on an evening that celebrated excellence across the sport.

Before receiving the main awards, Mondo Duplantis was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Year, while Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone secured the Women's Track Athlete of the Year title.

Spain’s Maria Perez and Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe were honoured as the Out of Stadium Athletes of the Year.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi took home the Men’s Track Athlete of the Year award, and Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised the athletes during the ceremony, highlighting the event's focus on celebrating the sport's best.

"The World Athletics Awards is a celebration of the very best of our sport," Coe stated as quoted by World Athletics. "If there’s a motto for this year’s Awards, it is ‘for the athletes, by the athletes’ and the recipients tonight will aptly receive their prizes from some of our most storied Awards winners down the years."

"I want to thank all the athletes present for their inseparable contribution to a memorable 2025, with its crescendo World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, the most widely covered and commercially impactful edition of our sport’s flagship event in its history," he added.
