The Taifa Stars begin their campaign on opening day, August 2, against Burkina Faso.

The squad has been fine-tuning preparations in a closed training camp in Ismailia, Egypt, as they gear up for their third CHAN appearance.

Defender Mohammed ‘Tshabalala’ Hussein underlined the team’s sense of purpose ahead of the tournament.

“So far the preparations have been good and the focus is on ensuring that we are in the best shape for the tournament,” he said.

“We are playing at home and we know the responsibility that comes with donning the national jersey. We are determined to do well in front of our home fans.”

Tanzania are aiming to break the barrier of the group stage, having failed to advance in their previous appearances in 2019 and 2020.

Burkina Faso brings tournament pedigree and a disciplined approach to the group. They will be a stern test for Tanzania and others in the pool. Mauritania, meanwhile, has grown steadily in recent years, and their CHAN 2024 campaign is seen as a major opportunity to make a mark on the continental scene.

Madagascar, who turned heads at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations by reaching the quarter-finals, are known for their resilience and flair qualities that could disrupt even the most tactically sound teams.

The wild card of the group is the Central African Republic. Making their CHAN debut, they remain an enigma. However, in a tournament often shaped by underdog stories, they cannot be ruled out.

“The players are really working hard in this camp because our ambition is to build a team that will fight for the badge, fight for the country in unity. This is a big competition and we have to be in the best shape,” Hussein added.

Ambition Meets Opportunity

Tanzania’s squad, boosted by months of careful scouting and tactical preparation, is brimming with ambition. Defender Dickson Job echoed the team’s optimism and hunger to make history.

“Our ambition is to win the tournament,” said Job.

“We know how tough this competition is and we believe if we prepare in the best way possible, and ensure everyone is focused, we will get good results. This is a chance for us as players to show what we can do on the international stage.”
