Anthony Joshua: Inside Nigeria's 'Best Hospital' Treating Injured Heavyweight Boxer After Horror Car Crash
Heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua is recovering from injuries at a top Nigerian hospital following a tragic car crash that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
His mother, Yeta Odusanya, has reportedly rushed to be by his side.
The accident occurred on Monday morning on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Makun, southwest Nigeria. Joshua, 36, was en route to visit family when the Lexus SUV he was in collided with a stationary truck. The impact was so severe that an eyewitness described the sound as being "like a bomb was going off."
Joshua's friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, were killed in the collision. The boxer and another passenger survived and were immediately taken to a specialised medical facility in Lagos for treatment.
An eyewitness told the Nigerian outlet Vanguard about the chaotic scene. "The bang from the impact jolted everyone," they said. "When we realised it was an accident, people rushed down... One of the men who survived shouted that we should help the people in the next car, saying one of them was Anthony Joshua." The witness added that Joshua was complaining of leg pain at the scene.
What Makes the Hospital Standout?
According to local reports, Joshua is being treated at the Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, a facility recognised as Nigeria's best private hospital for the past two years.
The hospital is known for its exclusive "Harley Street Practice," which offers VIP inpatients luxurious Duchess Royal Suites with 24-hour, one-to-one care and gourmet meals. These suites, which start at £2,000 (Ksh348,499), are described as offering a "combination of outstanding patient care with the luxury of five-star accommodation and privacy."
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed he had spoken with both Joshua and his mother by phone. In a statement, the president offered his condolences for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele.
"I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates," President Tinubu said. "He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital. I also spoke with AJ's mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call."
The president added that he had also been in contact with Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with the family and pledged to ensure Joshua receives the best possible care.
Images released by Nigerian officials show the devastating aftermath of the crash, with the Lexus SUV completely destroyed. The vehicle's doors were ripped off and its roof was crushed. A Mitsubishi, believed to have been part of Joshua's convoy, was seen undamaged nearby.
