Nigeria's U17 girls persevered and managed a scoreless draw on Friday night in Blida, on the outskirts of the Algerian capital, Algiers, despite the frigid weather. This resulted in their qualification for this year's FIFA U17 Women's World Cup finals.
The 2002 bronze medallists maintained a 4-0 lead after the first leg by adopting a cool-headed strategy that easily absorbed the anticipated attack from the hosts. They then used quick breaks to try to put pressure on their opponents.
Despite having the better chances that evening, the Flamingos were unable to convert their possession dominance into points, but they quickly won 4-0 on aggregate to secure their trip to Morocco.
The Flamingos put on a fantastic show in the first leg of the final round, winning 4-0 thanks to braces from Queen Joseph and one apiece from substitute Aisha Animashaun and Zainab Raji.
This year's FIFA U17 Women's World Cup finals, which will take place from October 17 to November 5, will include the Flamingos as one of Africa's five participants, along with hosts Morocco. For the first time, twenty-four teams will compete in the final.
Nigeria has only missed the finals once since the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup competition began in 2008 in New Zealand, and that was in the Uruguay-hosted event in 2018.
