With several of Kenya’s major stadiums currently closed for renovations in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, organisers are facing a growing challenge in securing a suitable venue for the match.

The clash, scheduled for April 26, will see Gor Mahia aiming to respond after suffering a narrow 1–0 defeat to AFC Leopards in the first leg earlier this season.

However, preparations have been complicated by the continued closure of Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo National Stadium, both of which are undergoing extensive upgrades ahead of AFCON 2027.

In a recent interview on Sporty FM, the AFCON 2027 LOC Chair Nicholas Musonye explained that the usual stadium options for the Mashemeji Derby are currently unavailable due to ongoing renovations and scheduled closures.

Nicholas Musonye reiterated that Kasarani Stadium is already undergoing extensive refurbishment, making it impossible to host the fixture there, while Nyayo National Stadium is also set to be closed as part of preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Regarding the return leg of the derby, Nicholas Musonye stated that discussions are ongoing with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to determine a suitable alternative venue, acknowledging the challenges involved in finding a stadium that can accommodate the high-profile match.

The chair emphasised that while the exact location has yet to be finalised, efforts are being made to ensure the fixture proceeds smoothly despite the current logistical constraints.

“Kasarani is under renovation already…so that one is out. It's impossible. For Nyayo, we are also closing. So the Mashemeji derby is in April…the return leg. So that one, we will see how we can work with FKF to see where you place it,” Nicholas Musonye stated.

The first leg of the Mashemeji Derby was held at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
