Du Plessis was the Chairman of Stewards in 2021 Equator Rally.

Legendary International Automobile Federation (FIA) Africa steward Willie Du Plessis has passed on after an illness.

FIA Africa said it was shocked by the death of the veteran rally official who was an indefatigable supporter of rally events across the continent.

“One of the biggest trees of our era in Rallying has fallen. It is with immense sadness to share with you that Willie Du Plessis has passed on. You will be remembered with fondness and love. The steps you have made will forever be visible," FIA Africa said.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you, Cobus, Albie, Hendry and your family. Thank you for sharing your dad with us, the Rally community of Africa."

Du Plessis has been the steward of the Safari Rally and Pearl of Africa Rally several times.

He was one of the FIA observers behind the scene whose reports on Safari Rally led to its return to the World Rally Championships after 20 years.

In 2018 he was among the officials who attended the Africa Rally Championship event in Nairobi that was run in the modern-day WRC format, unlike the Safari of yore.

Hundreds of safety and security marshals participated in the event, which successfully met the challenges of a modern WRC that pays attention to speed, smooth rides, and safety in a media-driven sport for maximum spectator joy and television viewership appeal.
