Abud Omar, who captained Harambee Stars at CHAN 2024, has explained his charismatic approach to leading his teammates at club and international level, which has earned several plaudits in local football circles

Harambee Stars left-back Abud Omar has opened up about the vital role he plays in maintaining harmony and motivation within the national team and at Kenya Police, describing himself as a natural leader who thrives on spreading positive energy.

Omar, who captained Harambee Stars during their impressive run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where they got to the quarter finals,  said creating the right atmosphere in the dressing room is just as important as what happens on the pitch.

“I do realise I brought that energy especially at CHAN 2024,” Omar reflected on Sports Eye Sports.

“In the dressing room, that vibe is important because it allows you to bring everyone together considering people are normally in very different moods — some are angry, others happy, and others sad.”

The experienced defender, who has played abroad and for top local clubs, said his leadership approach focuses on connecting with every player regardless of their personality or form. “You need everyone feeling part of the team,” he added. “That togetherness is what drives performance.”

Onyango a Very Talented Player- Abud Omar

Abud’s influence extends beyond the national team. At Kenya Police FC, where he has been a key figure in the club’s title-winning run, his leadership continues to inspire teammates on and off the field.

He particularly praised teammate and fellow left back Geoffrey Onyango, formerly of Kariobangi Sharks and the Emerging Stars side,  who has bounced back strongly after a difficult injury spell last season.

“He is a very talented player,” Abud said. “At Kenya Police, you have to be at top level to make it. He left Kariobangi Sharks for this club, and right now he is a champion of the league. He suffered an unfortunate injury last season, but now has bounced back.”

As Kenya Police continue to defend their FKF Premier League crown and Harambee Stars aim for a return to continental dominance, Abud’s leadership and “positive vibes” remain central to both teams’ ambitions.
