The German football coach has taken up a new challenge with a top North African club aiming for a strong comeback next season.

Former Harambee Stars coach Antoine Hey has been named the new manager of Algerian side ES Setif (Entente Sportive Sétifienne).

Antoine Hey was unveiled on Monday, July 14, showcasing the club’s ambition to return to the top as far as Algerian football is concerned.

The club plays in the Professional League 1, which is the top tier of Algerian football. Last season, the club finished in sixth place with 41 points out of 16 teams. They also reached the Quarter-finals of the Algerian Cup that season.

The Algerian side is confident that with Antoine Hey at the helm, they will be able to make an impact and hopefully rise to the podium in the next season.

“Entente Sportive Sétifienne is delighted to announce the signing of Antoine Hey as the head coach of the first team. We are confident that his international experience and strategic vision will strengthen our squad and help us achieve our ambitious goals for the upcoming season,” a statement from the club noted.

Antoine Hey brings with him an extensive and diverse football background, shaped by years of experience both on the pitch and on the sidelines.

As a former professional player, he enjoyed spells with notable European clubs such as Schalke 04 in Germany, Birmingham City in England, and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

His transition into coaching has seen him take on various roles across the African continent, building a resume that includes stints at top-tier clubs and national teams alike.

He has managed elite sides such as Al-Merreikh in Sudan and US Monastir in Tunisia, and has also led national teams including Rwanda, Liberia, Gambia, and Kenya, Harambee Stars. Hey was named Harambee Stars coach in 2009 before issues that led to his departure before he made his return in 2020.

Most recently, he worked with Lesotho, earning a reputation for tactical discipline and team rebuilding. Hey now takes charge of a club currently undergoing significant transition, having released seven players.

They include Abdelmoumene Chikhi, Amir Nouri, Diarra Moriba, Driss Chaabi, and Abdelrazak Mahra.

In addition, Oladapo Augustin Tunde and Kosi Rodrigue have seen their contracts terminated. After finishing sixth in the league last season with 41 points, the club is determined to make a stronger push in the upcoming campaign under Hey’s leadership and experience-driven approach.
