Harambee Stars tactician Benni McCarthy has revealed the big plan he has for young striker Lawrence after giving him his maiden national team call-up.

Harambee Stars boss Benni McCarthy is already planning for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations even as he juggles his current assignments with the national team.

McCarthy has a contract with Kenya up to AFCON 2027 and has been working towards building a team that will be competitive in the tournament.

That includes roping new players into the national team setup and the latest is striker Lawrence Okoth who was handed his maiden call-up ahead of the upcoming matches against Burundi and Ivory Coast.

Compared to Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, Okoth was one of the stand out players for Kenya’s Rising Stars at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in May, scoring two goals, earning a move to Finnish top-flight club SJK Seinajoki, and McCarthy says he waited for the perfect moment to call him up as the upcoming matches do not have much pressure which allows the young player to be eased into the team.

“I am in a position when we do not have the luxury of qualifying for the World Cup,” McCarthy told the media.

Lawrence Okoth Challenged to Grab Opportunity

“So we are out of the qualifying and so now, you can bring in young and new players and give them an opportunity to play in the national team and Lawrence, I saw him play in the AFCON U20, but that time we had Masoud Juma who is very experienced and very well-travelled international player. Jonah Ayunga, who is also playing very well for his team.”

McCarthy hopes the striker can grab his opportunity as he is among the players he wants to build around ahead of AFCON 2027 when some of the current senior stars might not be part of the national team setup.

“So injuries occur and this is an opportunity to rope in young players and give them a taste of international football and I hope the boy appreciates the opportunity he gets,” he added.

“When he gets it in one of the matches, then he must take it with both hands because 2027 is around the corner and we are building for AFCON.”

Okoth will hope to be involved as Kenya play away to Burundi on Thursday before a clash away to Ivory Coast in Abidjan next Tuesday.
