Boniface Muchiri, who contributed the assist for Ryan Ogam's winner against Zambia, has admitted President William Ruto's millions have played a huge role in Harambee Stars' CHAN 2024 dream run.
Harambee Stars deputy vice-captain Boniface Muchiri has admitted that President William Ruto’s financial incentives have played a massive role in motivating Kenya’s players during their dream run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on home soil.
Kenya stormed into the quarter-finals after topping Group A, widely regarded as the “group of death,” following wins over DR Congo, Morocco, Zambia and a draw with Angola.
The Stars now face Madagascar at Kasarani Stadium on Friday, with the dream of lifting the trophy in front of home fans still alive.

Benni McCarthy: Why Harambee Stars Believe Again After Stunning CHAN 2024 Run
The South African gaffer has sparked belief in Harambee Stars, guiding them through a stunning unbeaten run into the CHAN quarter-finals.
Ruto’s Incentive Scheme
Speaking on Citizen TV on Sunday night, Muchiri—who set up Ryan Ogam’s winning goal against Zambia—explained how Ruto’s promise of KSh 1 million per win has boosted the players’ hunger and belief.
“Our president knows how to motivate players. Players are all about motivation. This is life-changing money. At club level, winning bonuses add up to about 10,000 shillings,” Muchiri said.
“One million bob for 90 minutes? Wouldn’t you die on the pitch for it? I think it has played a huge role. I will not lie.”
Ahead of the tournament, President Ruto pledged KSh 1 million per win and KSh 500,000 per draw for each player and member of the technical staff.
With three group victories and a draw, each squad member has already pocketed about KSh 5.5 million.

Austin Odhiambo Reveals Benni McCarthy's Tactical Switch that Delivered Top Spot for Harambee Stars
Harambee Stars midfielder Austin Odhiambo has lauded coach Benni McCarthy for making a crucial tactical decision that saw them down Zambia and top their CHAN 2024 group.
The government’s package comes on top of CAF’s prize money, with Kenya already guaranteed at least $450,000 (KSh 58 million) for reaching the last eight.
Ruto has also dangled further rewards, including two-bedroom housing units and up to KSh 600 million if Harambee Stars go all the way and win the trophy.
Benni McCarthy’s Role
Muchiri was equally full of praise for head coach Benni McCarthy, the former South African striker who enjoyed a decorated playing career in Europe. He revealed how McCarthy has helped the players remain focused on football despite the huge incentives on offer.
“The coach was telling us, ‘If you think about money, you will forget our plan and tactics. Go out there and enjoy your football, and if you do, you will get positive results, and the rewards will come.’ That is the 1 million award the president has been promising us. He plays his part, and we play our part.”
Fans and Atmosphere
Muchiri also hailed the unwavering support from Kenyan fans, who have packed Kasarani Stadium throughout the tournament. For the 29-year-old Ulinzi Stars winger, the atmosphere has been unlike anything he has experienced in his career.

“We continue where we left off. We have to stay humble. The journey is just starting now.”
