Ryan Ogam recovered from a nasty four-month knee injury while playing for Tusker to make it back for Harambee Stars in time for the ongoing CHAN 2024.
Ryan Ogam has hailed Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy for his unwavering faith, crediting the South African tactician with helping him rediscover his best form as Kenya made history by reaching the knockout stages of the African Nations Championships (CHAN) for the first time ever.
The Tusker striker, who suffered a meniscus injury last season and spent over three months on the sidelines, faced doubts about his fitness when the tournament squad was announced. But he battled back to fitness in time and has since become one of the Stars’ standout performers.
Ogam started as a right winger against DR Congo, came off the bench versus Angola, and was then deployed as a center forward against Morocco and Zambia — scoring in both games to send Kenya through as Group A winners.

Millions Flow as Harambee Stars Shine in CHAN 2024 Group Stage Run
Harambee Stars' strong CHAN 2024 run has earned them millions in rewards from President Ruto, Raila Odinga, and CAF prize money.
Speaking after being named Man of the Match against Zambia, the 20-year-old expressed his gratitude:
“I feel great because I’ve helped the team secure the maximum three points. First, I thank God, then my coach and teammates for pushing me throughout the game. This is the reward — the three points.”
As Harambee Stars prepare to face Madagascar in the quarter-finals at Kasarani, Ogam praised the unity in camp, which he believes has been key to Kenya’s progress.
“It’s a great feeling for any player, and I’m grateful to be part of this team. We have a good mix of experienced and young players, and what’s helping us most is the teamwork and chemistry — it feels more like a family than just a football team.”

5 Things Learnt From Harambee Stars' Victory over Zambia to Finish Top of CHAN 2024 Group A
Harambee Stars overcame Zambia 1-0 to finish top of group A at the ongoing CHAN 2024.
McCarthy’s Belief
The former Rainbow FC star, who once played as a defensive midfielder before fully embracing the striker’s role after graduating from Dagoretti High School in 2024, revealed how McCarthy’s belief has been crucial in his recovery and growth.
“I’d like to thank the coach for giving me the chance to be part of the team. It’s been a difficult season, but also a learning process.
From Injury Setback to Breakthrough
After the injury, my mentality was always to come back and play at this championship. I also thank God for the chance to score two crucial goals — in the last match and again today. Hopefully, we’ll see how things go in the next games.”
McCarthy, himself a former striker, has not shied away from publicly backing Ogam — even tipping him last month to become the next “Michael Olunga.” The youngster, in turn, is determined to repay that faith.
“I also want to thank the coach. As a former striker, he’s been pushing me to get back to my best level — and even better.”
For a player who feared his injury would stall his rise, Ryan Ogam is now carrying Kenya’s hopes on his young shoulders — and doing so with maturity, humility, and an eye for goal.
