DR Congo have hit back at Nigeria following their petition at FIFA over claims of ineligibility of some Congolese players during their World Cup playoff.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has fired back at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following reports of a formal complaint to FIFA regarding the eligibility of nine players who featured in the recent World Cup playoff.

In a pointed social media post, the Leopards accused Nigeria of attempting to secure a place in the Intercontinental Playoffs through "back door" tactics after losing the decisive match on penalties.

"If you can’t win on the pitch, don’t try to win from the back door," the statement read. "The World Cup has to be played with dignity and confidence. Not with lawyers' tricks. Bring it on. Allez y les Leopards. Bad losers."

The NFF had earlier confirmed it lodged a petition with world football's governing body, alleging that the DRC fielded ineligible players during the final CAF 2026 World Cup playoff tie against the Super Eagles last month.

Nigeria Claim to Have Solid Case

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, claimed that FIFA was misled when clearing the players in question. "The Nigerian petition is on nine players of DRC," Sanusi stated. "FIFA were deceived into clearing those players because it is not FIFA’s responsibility to interpret or enforce domestic citizenship laws."

The core of Nigeria's argument is that the nine players hold dual citizenship, which they contend is not permitted under DR Congo's national laws, thereby making them ineligible to represent the country.

The DRC secured their spot in the Intercontinental Playoffs, scheduled for Mexico in March 2026, after defeating Nigeria in a penalty shootout, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup alive.
