Hansi Flick's Barcelona have been dealt a huge blow as the talented midfielder is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury that may require surgery.

Barcelona’s preparations for a decisive stretch of their season have been rocked by another injury setback to midfield prodigy Gavi.

The 20-year-old, who was already returning from a year-long absence due to a serious knee problem, has now picked up another knock that could require surgery.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente revealed his concern after speaking directly with the player. “Poor Gavi, I’m afraid he might need surgery again,” De la Fuente said.

“I spoke with him on the phone; he’s sad and worried because there’s a possibility he’ll need a meniscus procedure. He’s a great kid and an excellent footballer. I believe he’ll overcome all of this because he has a strong spirit.”

A Major Blow for Flick and Barcelona

The injury comes at a critical time for new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, whose team sits on seven points from three matches in La Liga.

The Catalans are attempting to defend their domestic treble this season while also targeting Champions League glory—a trophy they haven’t lifted since 2015.

Barcelona face Valencia this weekend before turning their attention to Newcastle United in their opening Champions League group-stage match.

Training resumes in full intensity on Thursday, but Flick will now be without Frenkie de Jong, who also picked up an injury during the international break, and possibly Gavi, whose long-term fitness is once again in doubt.

The young midfielder had only just begun regaining rhythm after last season’s extended layoff. Another lengthy spell on the sidelines would not only be a crushing personal blow but also leave Flick short of creativity and energy in the heart of midfield.
