Lionel Messi is widely tipped to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or in what will be a record-extending eighth award for the Argentina captain.

The ceremony will get underway on Monday in Paris, France and besides picking the winner of the most prestigious individual award in football history in men’s and women’s categories, top prizes in other sections will also be distributed.

Here is everything you need to know about the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Men’s Ballon d’Or

Messi is reportedly set to be handed a record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or award after leading Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar last year before winning the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain ahead of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

Haaland led City to the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup, scoring over 50 goals, but according to reports, that will still not be enough to topple Messi, who managed 32 goals and 25 assists.

A panel of journalists from the top 100 football nations, per the FIFA rankings, vote on the men's Ballon d'Or award. Each nation has one journalist representative who votes on the international ballot.

Women's Ballon d'Or

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Spain’s World Cup winner, Aitana Bonmati, is expected to bag the top prize.

Like the men's Ballon d'Or award, the Ballon d'Or Feminin is decided by an international panel of journalists. However, it is a panel of 50, one journalist from each of the top 50 nations.
